It immediately started planning, with support from both the private and public sectors of the Canadian travel and tourism industry, the First Global Conference: Tourism \u2013 A Vital Force for Peace, held in Vancouver, Canada, October 1988 with Air Canada as the Title Sponsor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Eight hundred persons from 68 countries participated in the event which featured video-taped messages from Pope John Paul II and U.S. President Ronald Reagan in the Opening Ceremony. President Vigdis Finnbogadottir of Iceland, the world\u2019s first elected woman Head of State was the Honorary Chair of the Conference. Exactly two years earlier she had hosted the Reykjavik Summit between President Ronald Reagan and General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev which resulted in the beginning disarmament of nuclear weapons between the U.S. and the Soviet Union.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Vancouver conference first introduced the concept of \u201cSustainable Tourism Development\u201d &#8211; four years prior to the UN Rio Summit on Environment and Development. It also introduced a new paradigm for a \u201cHigher Purpose of Tourism\u201d \u2013 a paradigm that includes the role of tourism in: promoting international understanding; collaboration among nations; protecting the environment and preserving biodiversity; enhancing cultures and valuing heritage; sustainable development; poverty reduction, and healing wounds of conflict.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Conference Declarations: <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Amman Declaration on Peace though Tourism on UN website.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Lusaka Declaration on Tourism, Climate Change and Peace on UNWTO adopted by UN World Tourism Organization<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Other Conference Outcomes:<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">World leaders UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold; Nelson Mandela; Mahatma Gandhi, King Hussein of Jordan and Martin Luther King Jr. acknowledged as<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cMen of Peace.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Broad international awareness to the potential of travel and tourism to contribute to broader societal and global objectives and the realization of a peaceful, just, and sustainable world.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">IIPT Credo of the Peaceful Traveler distributed throughout the world.;\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Awards to individuals and organizations in recognition of outstanding achievements that contribute to international understanding, cooperation and peace.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Second Global Conference, Montreal 1994: \u201cBuilding a Sustainable World through Tourism\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">influenced the World Bank to begin funding projccts to reduce Poverty Reduction through Tourism.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Uganda first nation in the world to introduce Tourism Legislation in support of the U.N. These also served as an early model for other nations. As well, IIPT developed guidelines for the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) GreenLeaf Program.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>First International Study of Tourism and Sustainable Development<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In 1993, IIPT was commissioned by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) to conduct the first international study of best practice regarding Tourism, Environment and Sustainable Development.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Peace Parks Across Canada<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The IIPT Peace Parks Across Canada program commemorated Canada\u2019s 125th Birthday as a nation in 1992. Three hundred and fifty cities and towns from St. John\u2019s, Newfoundland on the shores of the Atlantic \u2013 across five time zones to Victoria, British Columbia on the shores of the Pacific dedicated a park to peace. More than 330 parks were dedicated at noon local time, October 8th, as a National Peacekeeping Monument was being unveiled in Ottawa with 5,000 UN Peace Keepers passing in review. Each of the Peace Parks incorporated a \u2018Bosco Sacro\u2019 (Peace Grove) of 12 trees as a symbolic link with one another, and with nature &#8211; and as a symbol of hope for the future. The 12 trees were also symbolic of Canada\u2019s 10 Provinces and two Territories. Of the more than 25,000 projects commemorating Canada\u2019s 25th anniversary, Peace Parks Across Canada was said to be the most significant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Global Peace Parks Program<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cPeace Parks Across Canada\u201d has served as the foundation for the \u201cIIPT Global Peace Parks Program launched on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, 2000 \u2013 first year of the new Millennium &#8211; from Bethany Beyond the Jordan, site of Christ\u2019s baptism, as a legacy of the IIPT First Global Summit, Amman, Jordan.
