\"\"Hostelling International\u00a0has received the\u00a0Ambassador for Peace Award<\/strong>\u00a0for its leadership in promoting international understanding through travel<\/strong>.\u00a0 And whether a hostel\u00a0in Madison or Madrid, San Francisco or Sydney, Boston or Berlin, its an honor all within the HI network can\u00a0be proud of.<\/span><\/p>\n

The award was accepted by HI President Edith Arnoult-Brill on behalf of\u00a0Hostelling International\u00a0and its more than 80 national associations.\u00a0 It was presented on the Platinum Stage at the World Travel Market on November 5th<\/sup>\u00a0by\u00a0International Institute for Peace through Tourism (IIPT)\u00a0Founder and President Lou D\u2019 Amore.<\/span><\/p>\n

HI was one of eight organizations honored worldwide.<\/strong>\u00a0 Others included Airline Ambassadors International, Global Volunteers, Peace Boat and READ Global.\u00a0\u00a0 With its more than 3,500 hostels and 38 million overnights annually, HI was honored for its efforts to promote a culture of peace through tourism.\u00a0 It also was cited as an early proponent of sustainable tourism, a concept which today has entered the mainstream of travel.<\/p>\n

As an international federation, the London-based HI relies on\u00a0its national associations like\u00a0HI-USA\u00a0to advance its global mission and values through local hostels and activities.\u00a0\u00a0In the United States, we deliver\u00a0intercultural understanding and global citizenship every day through\u00a0our 55\u00a0mission-focused\u00a0hostels and our related programming<\/strong>, plus\u00a0special events such as\u00a0Sleep for Peace\u00a0and\u00a0The Great Hostel\u00a0Give Back.<\/p>\n

IIPT is a nonprofit that for the past 25 years has sought to build wider awareness of the potential for travel to promote a more peaceful world.\u00a0\u00a0 As a guest speaker at three global summits, I have seen first-hand the widening embrace of IIPT principles within the travel sector, including industry support for United Nations World Tourism Organization adoption of a global code of ethics in 2011 that highlights the link between travel and tourism, and peace and development.<\/p>\n

Seeing two deeply committed colleagues sharing the stage was a special pleasure.\u00a0 Outgoing HI president Edith Arnoult-Brill has spent her two terms of office seeking to advance HI and its mission philosophy.\u00a0\u00a0 And IIPT founder Lou D\u2019Amore has been a farsighted voice for travel and tourism as an engine for progress.<\/p>\n
